Unique Fellowship Program Focused on Neuro-Oncology Research: Applications Now Being Accepted for 2010.

The Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation is proud to announce a second year of funding for fellowships for medical school students interested in neuro-oncology research. This unique partnership with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), first initiated in 2009, provides medical students the opportunity to take a year off from their studies to conduct research in the field of neuro-oncology. HHMI-Ivy Fellows will be selected in Spring 2010 and begin their fellowship in Fall 2010.

“In our first year of the program we provided support to 4 outstanding medical students at leading medical schools across the country” says Rob Tufel, the Ivy Foundation Executive Director.  “We believe these young physician scientists will put into practice the Ivy Foundation concept of Patient-Focused Research as well as play a vital role in improving treatments and diagnostics for brain tumor patients”

Current HHMI-Ivy Fellows are working on a variety of projects including research looking at evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of MCT1 inhibition in glioblastoma using a glioma model, assessing the anti-tumor activity of IL-12 secreting human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (IL-12-hAMSCs) against glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), identifying potential therapeutic targets to improve radiation therapy efficacy in MG cells, and optimizing immunotherapy for patients with malignant glioma. These projects address issues that will hopefully lead to real clinical advantages for patients.

The HHMI-Ivy Fellowship program includes a special stipend that provides fellows the opportunity to attend a professional neuro-oncology conference in addition to the fellowship meetings organized by HHMI.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a medical school in the United States and students may apply during any year of their studies. For more information and an application for the 2010 HHMI-Ivy Fellowship please visit the HHMI website. The deadline for applying is January 11, 2010, 2:00 p.m. ET.
